Microsoft Dedicated to Modern Warfare 2 on the 360

This is great news to see.  Microsoft’s senior regional director for Entertainment Neil Thompson told MVC that Microsoft intends to offer the best possible experience for Modern Warfare 2.  As many of you know, day one of huge launch titles can sometimes be plagued by service issues due to the high volume of players online.  Neil's comments may lead one to believe that Microsoft will be prepared for the inevitable onslaught of players on Xbox Live on November 10th.

Microsoft is convinced gamers will get the most enjoyment out of Modern Warfare 2 on Xbox.
“We want to offer people the best possible Modern Warfare 2 experience,” said Microsoft’s senior regional director for Entertainment Neil Thompson.

“We firmly believe that with Live services, the quality of the gaming experience on 360, and all the new ways we can get consumers engaged with the IP that Xbox is the best platform to experience this great game. I never use the word ‘own’, but it is ours to make the most of, and that’s what we intend to do. We firmly believe that 360 will be the lead sales platform for Modern Warfare 2.

“We are working very hard with Activision to look at everything from consumer trials to in-store experiences to make the most of what will be a great launch.”

Anyone wondering what these "consumer trials" could be?

Seen and Heard: IW Developers on Modern Warfare 2

We admit it, we can be caught searching for nuggets of MW2 info just about anywhere, and that includes the title's official forums http://forums.infinityward.com/.  Here's a little section we're calling "Scene and Heard: IW Developers on Modern Warfare 2".  We've searched and found some discussions that we found interesting.  We hope you do too.  Enjoy!

In reply to a thread discussing the Coldblooded perk and it's interaction with helicopters and killstreak rewards in general...
Air support will not target players using Cold Blooded at all. "Air Support" includes all helicopter variants, Predator Missiles, AC130's and the as of yet unannounced . The will make you wish you had Cold Blooded when you don't... it's that evil. -IW_Scriptacus

In reply to a discussion on the riot shield in Search and Destroy...
Saying "adapt" is perfectly reasonable if you've played the game before and dealt with this kind of situation. Until the game ships, making assumptions based on limited information is just about all anyone on these forums can do (and this is fine), but concluding that an entire game mode is ruined before you've even had a chance to try it is just jumping the game. -IW_Scriptacus

In reply to a discussion regarding the ability to view your enemies on the heartbeat sensor.
Would you? You're assuming that everyone is visible on the HBS. And if they've got Stopping Power you'd better be quicker on the draw cause they'll take you down first even with the same weapon. If they're running with Lightweight they may not ever show up on your HBS at all because they moved on top of you between pings.

There's a lot more depth to this stuff than you may realize right now. Just wait til you play the game. -IW_Scriptacus

In reply to discussions of the recent SP level leak, which has been said to be the first mission of the game. Another user had mentioned Cliffhanger being the first mission.
Cliffhanger is definitely not the first mission in the game. -IW_Peasant

In reply to a discussion regarding expired sentry guns.
LOL! They don't appear out of laptops. You set them down and they activate. When they expire there is alternate version of the model that reflects this. -IW_Peasant

Modern Warfare at the Tokyo Game Show

Thanks to some keen eyes at the Tokyo Game Show, we now have what looks to be the first publicity coming from Square Enix for Modern Warfare 2.  As we had reported earlier, Square Enix has been recruited to publish MW2 since Activision had closed their Japanese doors last year.

Check out these Square Enix booth pics featuring Modern Warfare 2...

And here is what looks to be the first Japanese trailer for Modern Warfare 2 from Square Enix.  Skip to 1:25 in the clip for the beginning of the trailer.

Modern Warfare 2 Comic Book Details

As many of you know, adding to the consumer craziness that is Modern Warfare 2, we'll be seeing an official Modern Warfare 2 comic book which releases on November 11th, 2009.  Details are few at the moment, but we now know the summaries of the first two installments.
Nov Issue #1-
In anticipation of the sequel to the groundbreaking game, WildStorm brings you a no-holds-barred, brutal tale of the mysterious Task Force 141 soldier known as "Ghost." Learning the motivation behind his mask and moniker is the tip of the iceberg in a story spanning the globe from the United Kingdom to war-torn Afghanistan to the drug war in Mexico. Believe us, this will be talked about for years to come! Award-winning creator David Lapham (YOUNG LIARS, Stray Bullets) is joined by artist Kevin West in a shattering 6-issue tour-de-force epic!

Dec. Issue #2-
Sgt. Riley – codenamed "Ghost" – has found himself in many a sticky situation while serving in the S.A.S. But never has a mission fallen apart so fast. On his first Joint Task Force mission, a combination of betrayal and bad luck has landed him in the hands of a blood-thirsty Mexican drug czar. Could things possibly get worse? Absolutely, yes.

The best-selling Call of Duty video game series continues its comics debut in this 6-issue miniseries!
As you can see, there is a plan for 6 issues, each issue will be around 30-35 pages, and each will set you back $3.99.  Check out the cover art shots for the November and December issue below.

Modern Warfare 2 meets Fast and Furious?

Things have been a bit slow this week aside from the recent leak of a MW2 single players mission so we thought we'd show you a small comparison with the new footage.  We couldn't help but notice some similarities between the end of the MW2 level and a recent action movie that many of you know, Fast and Furious.

At 1:33 in the following Fast and Furious trailer you'll see Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) tackle a baddie through a window onto a cream colored sedan.

Now let's take a look at the last action sequence in the recent MW2 campaign leak.  At 8:10 you will see a team member tackle "the package" through a window....onto a cream colored sedan.

Coincidence?  Doubtful.  We can't deny that the similarities are definitely there.  It's also safe to assume that it is a good possibility that the devs working on this level could have pulled some "inspiration" from Fast and Furious as it's release date (4/09) is right in line with the MW2 development time line.  In any case, it's great to see the cinematic sequences are bigger and better this go around, which is a feat in itself.  This has been your slow news week tidbit.  Enjoy!

New Modern Warfare 2 Single Player Footage

Behold 8 minutes of Modern Warfare 2 single player gameplay.  The baddies are resilient, the music is epic (Hans Zimmer), and the pace is FAST.  Also make note of the 10G achievement shown at 5:17 in the video which was after what looked to be a triple kill with an M203 grenade launcher.

The setting is that of a favela in Brazil.  Enjoy!

Modern Warfare 2 Interview: Lead MP Designer Todd Alderman

Joystiq has just published a great interview with Todd Alderman, lead multiplayer designer for Modern Warfare 2. Here are a few things to mention that we find in this interview...

- Insight into shield gameplay
- Insight into Spec Ops modes
- Snowmobiles will be in mp, although you can't ride them.  This leads us to believe that we will FINALLY be seeing a multiplayer level in the snow.
- Teamkillers and the likes have been addressed
- Matchmaking has been addressed
- 1 player per console via Internet (Xbox Live, PSN)
- More than 16 maps will ship with the game

There's an upcoming Wii port of the first Modern Warfare. How do you guys feel about that being handled by somebody else?

It depends on what it ends up being, but I have actually played the Modern Warfare on Wii and I think it is really good. So as long as things aren't being distorted and becoming things we don't want them to be, I don't think it bothers us.

What about the name? When this was originally announced, it was just "Modern Warfare 2." Then, when we started talking about it again, it had the Call of Duty tag in front of it. For a while it seemed like this was going to go off in another direction and then Treyarch was just going to work on the Call of Duty games. Now it is back to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. What's going on with that?

Well there are a lot of different factors involved, but we wanted to make sure, and I tried to state this at the beginning, that this is a different game. I mean it is not ... it has got 2 on it obviously, but it is not just a sequel. It is not just another Call of Duty game. It is a big new thing and we want people to associate it with Modern Warfare 2. And it is the same story, so it is in the Call of Duty universe.

So messaging it both ways, I think it's helpful. People that are in the know, know what Modern Warfare 2 is. People that know what Call of Duty is might not necessarily get it in a way, but establishing that identity and making sure that this is Modern Warfare 2. It is not just Call of Duty blah, blah, blah. It is Modern Warfare 2. And then having the Call of Duty ... we are not denying it is Call of Duty.

But it seems like Infinity Ward would like to call it Modern Warfare 2.

We do call it Modern Warfare 2. It is still Call of Duty. But to us, that is how we refer to it. That is how we talk about it.

Obviously, with Infinity Ward and Modern Warfare, or Call of Duty, whatever you choose to call it, the expectations are very big. Do you guys ever have to sit back and just go, "Okay, how do we top ourselves?"

That is exactly what we did when we started working on this game. I mean how do you not? When we released Call of Duty 4, to us it was the best thing ever. Then it was like, "Oh yeah, let's go to the next one. It is going to be hard." But you have to figure it out. It was a daunting task but I think we were able to do it.

You embrace the challenge.

Yeah, if it is easy to do it is never that fun. And the fact that we were faced with this mountain and we were able to come out with something that is actually new and in the same universe, it was great.

How did you top multiplayer?

Multiplayer is definitely much bigger and deeper than before. There are just so many more elements and variables that make it different. I mean we are all big on customization, being able to let players tweak things. I mean we want everyone to play our game, obviously. We want it to be accessible. But we want every person to be able to have their own play style. There are things in there for people that love to snipe. There are things for people that love to use the assault rifles, that love to be sneaky, that love to use AC-130's and shoot people from the sky.

There is even something in there for people that can't shoot. I am not the guy that shoots; pointing a gun and making bullets come out is not my cup of tea, but you get the riot shield and your job is to help your team. It is a whole new element. It really changes the way you play the game.

Can anybody use that riot shield or is it just that class?

It is a primary weapon. So you can choose to take an M4 or you can choose to take a riot shield. What you are giving up with that is your primary weapon. So when you have the riot shield out, you can't shoot. All you are doing is blocking. You can kill the other guy with melee, but it takes two hits. Like the knife is an instant kill; one hit, he dies. With the riot shield you bash him with the shield and then you bash him again. Then they die. So it is much harder to kill someone, but it is really satisfying.

Does that shield wear down after a while? Like if people are hammering it with bullets, does it eventually break up?

No.

So you can't use the shield and a smaller secondary weapon like a pistol at the same time?

You can swap to another weapon. But while you have the shield out, you can't fire. The shield has a slower swap because it is so big, which is another balancing factor of the shield. You can't just go up to the guy and "bam bam" kill them. You have to swap it out, and they see what you are doing. And depending on what your secondary is, how fast you swap. They can stick semtex to your shield and blow you up.

There are different angles as well. I mean, to be truly effective with it you have to crouch because your feet aren't covered unless you are crouching. But then you are moving slower. You are more vulnerable. It definitely is a unique experience. And also, when it is taking hits you actually get the visual cracks on the shield. So eventually, if you are really good with the riot shield, eventually you can't seen anything anymore because there are nothing but bullet holes covering the shield.

Gears of War 2 added a horde mode, and then Halo: ODST has the Firefight mode. You guys have Spec-Ops. Is that sort of your version of that?

It is not a version of anything.

What are they? Timed scenarios?

When we are making Modern Warfare 2, we want to cover as much ground as possible. We want to have the coolest story that you could possibly have in a video game. We want to have the deepest, longest lasting multiplayer you could have in a video game. And then there is also that middle ground of people that may be intimidated by multiplayer or just have a friend they just want to play.

They don't want to play other people; they just want to play the game and unlock things and work their way up and just have fun, and Spec-Ops gives you different ways to play the game. And it really adds to ... you can play it by yourself or you can play it with friends, and there are so many different Spec-Op missions and different difficulties that will keep you busy for a while. It is a lot of fun.

Can you describe what spec ops is really quick?

Spec Ops is ... you have your campaign, which is the story. You have your multiplayer, which is the online stuff. And then you have Spec Ops. These are like standalone missions that you can play by yourself or with a friend in split screen or over the Internet. This is the best analogy, Airplane from the last game, it is a short mission and there are just a lot of these. They are missions that aren't tied to the story, but there are a great variety of different locations, different types of missions. You will do things that you can't do in multiplayer and you can't do in single player.

Will these take place in locations that don't even appear in single player?

Maybe.

Is Time Crisis a bit of a better comparison? Fast-paced, just trying to get to the end of the level.

Some are. Honestly, every spec of mission is sort of treated as its own game. So it follows the rules of Modern Warfare 2, but everything is almost like a different minigame almost. It might be a time challenge or it might be kill all the bad guys. There is just a huge variety of different ways to play it.

So does your role include overseeing the DLC?

Yeah. I mean when we were doing the DLC on the last game right after the game shipped, so there is a lot of figuring out what the next thing potentially is. It is back and forth. Like, I am working on multiplayer some of the time. I am working on single player some of the time. I am working on DLC some of the time.

Do you guys bring the snowmobiles into multiplayer?

No, not that you can ride at least. They are there.

We saw a lot of problems not long ago appearing with the modders glitching in Call of Duty, and you guys were putting out patches to combat that. Are you guys going to implement any sort of team voting to kick a player out in the next one?

No. There is no team voting. We tried to fix the problem and not just the symptom. So if there is something really messing with the game, we just jump right on top of it and try to fix it.

Does the game already handle griefing? Like, if you have a guy who is team killing all the time.

Well, it's only in hardcore mode. So if you are a griefer in hardcore mode, the more you grief, the more you are punished. There is a respawn timer that gets bigger and bigger the more you grief. But we have different ways that we handle that.

What about the matchmaking in the new game? Have you addressed any of the issues?

There are a lot of improvements to the matchmaking system. I don't have any technical answers for you, but there are definitely new things in place to try and prevent that. But yeah, we know. We know exactly what's going on.

Will you be able to play multiplayer with two people on one console, going online together?

No.

Have you guys announced how many multiplayer maps you're going to ship with it?

No. There are lots.

Lots, okay. More than the original game came with?

Yes. Bigger in every way.

Switchblade - Most knife kills.
Grudge Match - Most kills of same player.
Pathfinder - Most UAV's.
Sprayer - Most hip-fire kills.
 Vengeful - Most paybacks.

Secondary Weapons

Secondary weapons are no longer just pistols – they include machine pistols, shotguns (standard and automatic), and various rocket and missile launchers. This is great news for snipers, who will no longer be helpless in close-quarters (an automatic shotgun is a sniper’s best friend). And with a well-fired missile, you can take down helicopters, AC130s, UAVs and other nuisances. -GR

Attachments
CoD4’s red dot sight, grenade launcher, and suppressor are still here, but there’s so much more. Attachments no longer refer to just physical objects and properties, they can refer to skills too. Akimbo (dual wielding) and Rapid Fire are a whole lot cooler than “Digital Camo.” Other new attachments include a heartbeat sensor, thermal scope, and tactical knife.

In other news, sniper rifles can now be fitted with suppressors. “Run and gun” players may not like the change, but sneaky bastards like myself are all over it. Shotguns are now suppressible too. -GR

Riot Shields

If you need a change from the usual strategy, try replacing your primary weapon with a riot shield. It’s bullet proof up to a point, and makes you a pretty damn menacing opponent. You can’t shoot and hold the shield at the same time, but you can bash people’s heads in, and when you’re using your secondary weapon, the shield is stowed on your back, giving your quantum singularity a little extra protection. Combine this with a blast shield, and your enemies will have a hell of a time knocking you down.

Game Modes

Demolition-  A new and improved version of Call of Duty 4’s Sabotage mode. Everyone on the attacking team has a set of explosives and these can be set on two bomb points simultaneously. The attacking team tries to bomb both points before the round ends. Successfully blowing up one point extends the time limit. The countdown timer on the explosives is around 45 seconds to give the defense a chance. -G4

Capture the Flag- Standard CTF, but capturing the enemy flag requires your flag to be at home. Picking up a flag is done automatically by standing over it for around a second. Returning a downed flag is just as fast. Flag carriers will appear on your HUD as periodically updating waypoints, showing the carrier’s position as of a few seconds ago.-G4

Multiplayer Maps
Afghan

Afghan is a rocky desert map, the centerpiece of which is the ruins of a downed jumbo jet. The open central area, which contains the aeronautic set piece, is great for snipers as it’s overlooked by several high cliffs and bunkers. At the northern and southern ends, the passages become more confined in caves and on ledges, and the fighting gets more intense. -GR

Favela

The term “favela” means shanty town, which, you guessed it, is what this is. The best way to conceptually divide this map is into two sections – the high ground and the low. The high ground is on the rooftops, which provide little cover but offer faster travel and a broad view of the larger streets and objective sites. The low ground is great for making escapes, as you can disappear around corners faster than your pursuer can rattle off bullets, though you must always be weary of the marksmen who lurk above. -GR

Highrise

This map’s uncharacteristic modern urban setting is very welcome. The map is comprised of the roof of an unfinished skyscraper (complete with helipad), two interior office spaces at the northern and southern ends, and a passageway which connects the two sides. -GR

Callsign Menu (via @pstjoker)

In this picture you will find the callsign, which will be customizable with a myriad of options from title, emblem, rank, etc as well as what looks to be post-game accolades

Accolades

None Spared - Killed entire enemy team.
Switchblade - Most knife kills.
Grudge Match - Most kills of same player.
Pathfinder - Most UAV's.
Sprayer - Most hip-fire kills.
 Vengeful - Most paybacks.

Aha! That's why we have callsigns, which are essentially big customizable plaques which pop up when you score a kill or perform a commendable action. Callsigns include a title, which is a string of letters (in this case "My name is"), an insignia (that ghostly fellow), a background, and, of course, your gamertag and rank. The titles, insignia, and backgrounds are all unlockable, and there are hundreds of them unlock. You can unlock them by leveling up, or by completing certain prerequisites. For example, we unlocked the “Accident Prone” insignia, presumably from falling off too many ledges. -GR

Modern Warfare 2 Confirmed Weapons List (Assault Rifles)

We know that some of you are against or just not into forums, so we've decided to find the best information out there and bring it to you!

First up we have an extensive list of confirmed Modern Warfare 2 weapons by way of the official Infinity Ward forums. oh no epidemic has brought us what looks to be the largest, source-filled, informative list to date, and we're glad to present that to you right here on the WePlayCoD blog.

Instead of posting every weapon on the blog, which would take up quite a bit of room, we've decided to give you a taste by starting off with the confirmed Assault Rifles. We've created a dedicated page on the WePlayCoD site highlighting oh no epidemic's work. There you will find all confirmed weapons for Modern Warfare 2 including Assault Rifles, Sub-Machine Guns, Light/Heavy MGs, Sniper Rifles, Sidearms, and Grenades...all in an easy to read format. - MW2 Weapons Page
