WePlayCoD Breaks Down Call of Duty: Black Ops Teaser

Ok, we've finally wiped the saliva from our mouths and replaced our socks which were knocked off by last night's Black Ops trailer.  We're here for one thing, and on thing only...to figure out what in the hell was going on in that fast-paced and action-packed trailer of exponentially epic proportions.

Let's jump right in.  Thanks to our friends at Gametrailers for providing the HD video.  We've captured some of those images that we found important and will be discussing those right now...

First up we are in what looks to be some type of high-tech facility being talked to by what we can only assume is some type of "doctor".  We see medical instruments, drugs, and syringes on a nearby operation table.  This "doctor" can be heard saying "This should help you remember everything."  This situation is very MKULTRA-esque.  MKULTRA was a US program that ran from the early 50's into the late 60's with the goal of extracting valuable information from the human mind via various drugs, hypnosis, and other psychological experiments.  You can also see what looks to be a 2010 date in the lower right hand corner possibly meaning that we're dealing with flashback sequences.

First we see the launch of an ICBM, or Intercontinental Ballistics Missile.  Gaining popularity during the Cold War, these bad boys were mainly designed to carry nuclear warheads across great distances.  Unfortunately it looks like someone hit the big red button already, so let's hope someone has the means to intercept before it reaches the planned destination.

In this shot we can see what looks to be a Russian scientist or doctor attempting to escape an explosion of sorts.  You can also see two soldiers, which leads us to believe that this could be a military laboratory.

Arctic environments you say?  Well we obviously know that there were no arctic environments in the Vietnam War.  Perhaps we'll be making a trip to Russia in order to take care of some business, but don't forget that UK retailer GAME leaked this game description which also mentions "the Arctic" ...

"Now you will witness the birth of the Elite Special Forces and take part in off-the-record missions using unconventional weaponry to get the job done! From Cuba to the Arctic and the jungles of Vietnam, Call of Duty: Black Ops features stunning cinematic graphics and intense gameplay that puts you right at the heart of the action!" - SOURCE

Not much in the way of theories in this image, but it looks like we may be in store for another gory depiction of war as was the case with Treyarch's last installment, World at War.  Hopefully this translates over the multiplayer as well.  We know some of you felt that it was "over the top", but we'd rather see decapitated melons and exposed femurs over a "jelly-like spray of blood" any day.

Per the caption, you can see a downed chopper which ends up underwater.  We do know that there were underwater features planned for World at War that were ultimately scrapped.  Perhaps Treyarch plans on bringing that scenario back this time?  We shall see.

What looks to be confirming rumors, here we see what looks to be Vietnamese militiamen tearing through the jungles.  Beautiful jungles might we add.  Beautiful until you hear the chatter and gunfire from one of America's most dangerous and elusive enemies of any past war.

Rappelling sequence, coming right up.  This man that pops up a few times throughout the trailer can be seen dropping from what we can assume is a Huey in what looks to be either Vietnam or Cuba.  We're going with Cuba, but that's just a hunch.

Next up we see what looks to be a soldier dragging a fellow comrade to safety.  This got us thinking, what if this were not only contained to single player, but was also brought into the multiplayer portion of the game.  Treyarch gave us a medic class in CoD3 which allowed us to revive fallen friendlies (MEDIC!, MEDIC!).  They brought it back as a perk when World at War released as Second Chance.  Perhaps this time around we'll be given the opportunity to not only revive fallen friendlies, but drag them to safety before doing so.

Here we see the extremely popular UH-1A, also known as the Huey.  Used for everything from insertion and extraction, to combat missions, this WAS the pinnacle chopper of the Vietnam War.

It's time for another weapon shot.  Many have suspected this to be an M4 Rifle or MP5 in the first screenshot, but we're going with the CAR-15 Commando model...which coincidentally, was specifically issued to the US backed Studies and Observations Group during Vietnam.  S.O.G. for short has been rumored to be the group we'll be a part of in Black Ops.  More on that in a bit.  The flash shots of the weapon in the "high tech facility are via zeroy of RGN...who also is creator of the insanely amazing Vietnam Mod for World at War.  We're not exactly sure what weapon it is, but it does resemble the M4, and keep in mind the 2010 date also seen in the facility.

Once again, these images will not be seen if you blink, sneeze, or cough.  We have what looks to be the image of a lunar rover, similar to the rover used in the Apollo moon program used by the US in the early 1970's.  Make of this what you will, but we're assuming that we're once again at odds with the Russians in a space program.  Again, thanks to zeroy for these images.

Next we get a shot at two weapons that make an appearance in Black Ops.  The Steyr AUG and the RPK74 AR.  We're guessing that these are both being used by the Soviets, and is most likely in a Cold War, post Cuban Missile Crisis setting.

Who's this badass?  As GTTV also guessed, we're going with the main character.  And since we've done our homework, we'll go the route of this being Frank Barnes, the "fiercely patriotic veteran of WW2…a solid leader, possessed with an excellent ability to assess and respond to any situation quickly and decisively".  If you'll remember back a few months ago, VG247 snagged a casting call sheet calling for voiceover actors for an ATVI video game (LINK).  To further corroborate that rumor, the crew over at the Call of Duty Zombies forum (LINK) uncovered this document which also mention the S.O.G. (Studies and Observations Group) which was a highly classified group employed by the US during the...you guessed it, Vietnam War.

Nothing extremely exciting about this shot theory wise, but it does look to provide more proof for the Vietnam rumors.  Vietnamese style conical straw hat?  Check.  AK-47 (used by North Vietnamese)?  Check.

Next up we see a first person view from a chopper which looks to be raining down some heavy fire on an enemy deep in the thick of the jungle.  Perhaps a Cuban or Vietnamese setting.  Infer what you will, but we sure hope this does in fact end up being a player controller action sequence.

The above pictures show an SR-71 and an SR-71 pilot in the fully pressurized suit, developed by the David Clark company at the beginning point of American's involvement in the Cold War.  SR-71's were primarily used in recon missions over North Vietnam.  Below is an actual photo of an SR-71 pilot fully suited up...

The ending image is the back of an unidentified man.  That green jacket looks awfully familiar though, and if the rumors prove to be true, we ARE going on a trip to Cuba.  In other words, we could be having a run-in with Comandante himself, aka Fidel Castro.  Then again, we could be sorely wrong.  Again, we shall see.

Well, there you have it.  We've nitpicked what we saw in the video.  Perhaps you've seen something that we missed or would like to discuss this more.  Feel free to tweet us @WePlayCoD or visit our forums (LINK) if you'd like to continue the discussions.

  7. could this mean that the Call of Duty franchise is headed to a more futuristic game play? Treyarch... obviously not... but maybe a new game producer could come in to play?
